Busch Gardens Tampa Information

For close to 50 years the Busch Gardens Tampa Theme Park has been providing patrons with thrills and educational experiences galore. This theme park, which is part of the Busch Gardens chain, was opened in March 1959. It features an African theme and is home to a number of amusement park rides and thousands of species of animals.

Located just outside of Tampa, Florida, this park began as Busch Gardens Africa when it opened, since the theme of the park was the continent of Africa. It opened as a companion park to the Anheuser-Busch facility in Tampa, and therefore started with no admission fee. The park, which spans 335 acres in total, originally held beer tastings, hosted a bird garden and a "Stairway to the Stars" which transported guests via escalator to the top of the beer brewery.

The first expansion was the Serengeti Plains, which was a fully constructed African plains sanctuary that allowed wildlife to roam freely. Roller coasters and other thrill rides were built, and a small admission fee was charged. Today it is owned and operated by the SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment corporation, and was one of the top 20 most visited parks in the country in 2011.

Busch Gardens Tampa is home to nine separate areas where rides, animals and more can be found. These themed areas include Morocco, the bird gardens, Stanleyville, Congo, Jungala, Timbuktu, Nairobi, Crown Colony Plaza and Egypt. A replica steam train called the Serengeti Express and a Skyride take visitors from one section to another to enjoy all the different "countries" have to offer.

In addition to its thrill rides, Busch Gardens Tampa is well known for its animal exhibits. Popular additions to the park include the Cheetah Run, which features demonstrations and a "meet the keeper" event each day; the Serengeti Plain, a 65 acre area where visitors will find Grevy's zebra, giraffes, bongos, addax, white rhinoceros, ostrich, storks and more. In the Myombe Reserve area you find a collection of giraffes, gorillas and chimpanzees. The "Edge of Africa" allows visitors to walk through an area and observe native African animals such as the Nile crocodile, meerkats, lions, hyenas, hippos and even lemurs. Bats, snakes, lizards and more are found in the Curiosity Caverns.

Action doesn't stop once the regular season is over. Busch Gardens Tampa regularly features live music through its Real Music Series, and offers special events around Halloween and Christmas.
