Gurnee Information

The Village of Gurnee, Illinois, is a suburb of Chicago, but don't let its proximity to the 3rd largest city in the country fool you: Gurnee has a lot of its own going on. The Village of Gurnee is probably best known as the home of Gurnee Mills Mall, the fourth largest shopping mall in Illinois. Just a few miles from Gurnee Mills Mall is Six Flags Great America, an amusement park with a strong regional draw and world-class entertainment, rides, and roller coasters. While Gurnee does have a major freeway (I94) running through it, there are no regional train stops (METRA) within the community, causing it some disadvantages.

History
The Gurnee area was first settled around 1850 when schooners and people on horseback first arrived. A school was built, as well as a permanent bridge over the Des Plaines River. This bridge caused Gurnee to become the center of the region since much of the traffic in the area flowed through it. Gurnee's fate is largely tied to the Chicago region as a whole, and a large portion of the community's economy is based upon the Mall and Park.

Gurnee Mills Mall
Gurnee Mills Mall, a 40 mile drive from both Chicago and Milwaukee, encompasses 1.8 million square feet and is probably the thing most people in the Chicago area know Gurnee for.

Six Flags Great America
Anyone who loves roller coasters has heard of Six Flags Great America. The park first opened in 1976 under the Marriot Corporation's ownership, and quickly grew into the mega-park it is today. The park has 12 themed sections, and many record-breaking thrill rides. Among the more famous roller coasters are the wooden American Eagle, the Raging Bull, Superman, Batman the Ride, and the Viper.

Gurnee Days and Other Community Activities
Gurnee is known as a great place to raise a family in part because of the great family-oriented activities that take place in the Village. Every year in August, families converge on the Village Center for fireworks, food, and fun activities. The Village also puts on parades throughout the year as well as fourth of July festivities. The Village retains a small town feel despite its proximity to a much larger region. Gurnee offers visitors and residents alike a great experience, whether it is the world-class shopping, entertainment, or family atmosphere of the Village. Gurnee is a place with something for everyone.
